“Your earrings seem strange…do you belong to a cult?”

Getting soaked in the beautiful turquoise Mediterranean Sea, licking ice cream, visiting Mount Olympus, and shopping in Thessaloniki with Vivie, a cochlear implant user from Greece, are all the adventures which I’m currently living.

Yesterday, after a lovely long day at one of the most magnificent beaches in Chalkidiki, a region in northern Greece, Vivie and I were both waiting at a bus stop.  An old lady whom Vivie calls “Granny” approached us.  I saw the woman, but Vivie was distracted by staring in the opposite direction.  Because I did not know a single Greek word, I tapped Vivie.  Vivie and the Granny spoke to each other while I just stared into space.  After Granny left, Vivie told me about their conversation.

“By the way, your earrings seem strange, but they’re very nice!  Do you belong to a cult?” asked Granny.

Neither Vivie nor I were wearing earrings.  So, she was obviously commenting about our processors.  No, we both did not have any sparkles or any kind of decoration on our processors.  Ours are just plain and simple.  My hair was up and Vivie’s hair is short enough for her processor to be noticeable.

We both laughed hysterically!  “Did you explain to the woman what those ‘earrings’ were,” I asked Vivie.

“No.  She immediately left before I had a chance to comment,” she said.

UGH!  This would have been an incredible awareness opportunity!
