CI Content in “Step Brothers” Movie

August 6th, 2008 by | Tags: , , , | 4 Comments »

As I mentioned before, the father character in Will Ferrell’s latest film, “Step Brothers”, is supposed to be a CI surgeon.  I went to see the movie last week, and here is a quick review of the CI content in the film:

  • The opening scene is set at a CI conference, where the father character is giving a presentation about the new BTE model of the “RTI Cochlear Implant” … which looks a lot like Cochlear’s Babyworn device.  The presentation quickly dissolves into nonsense, however, when the father character notices the mother characther’s… umm… assets as she sits in the audience… and the storyline continues downhill from there.
  • At one point in the film, Will Ferrell is fighting with the father character and says, “… I will shove one of those fake hearing devices so far up your a** that you’ll be able to hear your small intestine!” (paraphrased)

So… just a tiny bit of CI-related content, but still a victory because nothing was misrepresented and/or insulting.  Overall, the plot of the movie was pretty crude, but I’ll forgive them for that, because even if it was just a few fleeting moments, at least CIs are gaining a little more exposure in the mainstream media!

haha, I’m actually laughing. I’m a Will Ferrell fan so he can do no wrong. You’re right at least there was no wrong information or anything!

Already sounds like a funny movie, thanks for sharing the CI bits of the movie. I definitely will watch that one at the theatre soon or when it’s out on dvd.

huh? Will Ferrell called them “fake” hearing devices — didn’t you think that was objectionable? but never mind, I don’t really care — WF could read aloud from the phone book and still be funny!

Well, I didn’t take the “fake hearing devices” as offensive because, well, that’s what CIs are — they’re an artificial replication of typical hearing. I guess it was the tone, too. Will Ferrell’s character in the movie is a 30-something man who acts like a 12 year old boy, and I guess that “fake hearing device” is exactly how I expect an immature preteen boy to describe a CI. Not rudely, just reflective of his limited understanding of the topic. That’s just my take, though.

I agree with you all — Will Ferrell is hilarious!!!
