What Are the Major Goals of an Auditory-Verbal Education?

The goals of a quality Auditory-Verbal Education are:

  • To assist the student in becoming a competent and confident oral communicator in oral language, written language, and everyday social situations.
  • To give the student an opportunity to have a wider range of educational, social, and employment opportunities so he may have an independent lifestyle.
  • To always work in partnership with parents so that the use of residual hearing and hearing technology (cochlear implant, hearing aid) becomes an important and integral part of the student’s identity and everyday life.  The student primarily uses his hearing in all learning and social situations supplemented with speechreading if needed.
  • To prepare the student to be able to mainstream into a regular educational placement when the child is ready to do so emotionally, socially, and educationally.
  • To provide the student with excellent audiological information, management, care, and follow up so the student always has access to sound and language through the use of his cochlear implant, hearing aids, FM system, etc.
  • To employ a knowledgeable and experienced faculty who are trained in the areas of audition, speech, language, learning theory, child development, and parent counseling.
  • To provide a strong academic curricula which sets high expectations for all students.
  • To work in partnership with the student’s family using a team approach.  The team of professionals consists of a wide range of educators and professionals who are committed to providing appropriate educational goals, objectives, and support so that the student may be successful in his learning environment.
  • To provide a meaningful learning environment which focuses on developmentally appropriate and hands-on” learning that is notprimarily based on the “drill and practice” approach.  The learning environment should:
    • challenge the student to use his critical thinking skills
    • provide him with a learning environment which has abundant natural opportunities for the student to interact with others in meaningful conversations
    • focuses on giving the child opportunities to use his targeted audition, speech, and language goals and objectives in natural meaningful learning situations
  • To provide the student’s family with the latest technological information on cochlear implants, hearing aids, and FM systems.
  • To provide education on technology, hearing loss and its affect on the student’s learning in addition to providing support for the regular classroom teachers and staff when a student in mainstreamed into a regular educational placement.
  • To instill in the student the gift of life long learning — and most importantly — to have fun while doing it.

really like the part that it shouldn’t be based on drill and skill. find me a place that doesn’t do that!!!!!! i hope even AVT training has gotten better over the past years so that there is less highchair time and more ‘play/learn’ time.
